The first annual award ceremony for excellence in Canadian science journalism ended the weekend-long conference.

The Science Journalism Research Group at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism awarded a $3000 prize for each piece of journalism in three categories: print, broadcast and Internet.

There were many submissions and a panel of judges narrowed down the winners to the following:

The Genome BC Society and Ethics Prize for Print Science Journalism went to Allan Casey for an article, “Forgotten Lake” in Canadian Geographic Magazine.

The CMMT Prize for Broadcast Science Journalism went to Carol McGrath, Brain Marleau and Kelly McKeown for their report, “Gunther’s Thin Slices,” which was done for Daily Planet. The award was accepted by Executive Producer Anne-Marie Varner.

Prize for Internet Science Journalism went to Stephen Strauss for “Blowing Big Smoke at Asthma,” which was published on cbc.ca.

A fourth award, the Barry Lando Prize for Best Science Journalism Overall was announced at the end of the night and it went to Stephen Strauss.

Congratulations to all the winners.
